Our Little Orchid

Today I had two appointments for our little Chanelle: a phone appt. with a preschool occupational therapist and an appt. with a dietitian. All because Chanelle is a picky eater and still does not like to eat fruits or vegetables (with the exception of some baby food), among many other foods she refuses to try.

This is hard for me to accept. I've always thought that (to an extent) picky eaters are created. But apparently this is not always the case. Chanelle is not only sensitive to taste, temperature, and texture, but to everything else you can imagine, too. Sensitive feelings, sensitive skin, sensitive immune system (?), sensitive temperament... the list goes on.

The OT I talked to today told me they have a name for these delicate children.

Orchids.

Incredibly sensitive and fragile, but they turn out beautiful.

I loved that!

Maybe we'll stop calling her the devil child...

Have you looked into Sensory Processing Disorder? Our doctor thinks Emmett may have it - he's also a picky eater, is sensitive to loud sounds, things touching his skin, etc.

Hey Lyndsey I don't want to be too nosy, but did the OT talk to you about sensory integration at all? I love the analogy about the orchid too. Chanelle looks so big in all those pictures, she's such a pretty little girl. It's been way too long since we've seen you guys!

That's a beautiful way to put it. I'll have to remember it for Miss W when she's in a mood.

I've thought of some pretty "nice" words to describe Max's picky eating. What is the manly way of describing an orchid? She is beautiful, by the way.
